The holidays are upon us, and there’s no better time to roll up our sleeves and provide a helping hand to those in need. As we spend time with our loved ones and take stock of the many things that have happened this past year, let’s also devote some time to holiday giving and helping those less fortunate.

Whether it’s volunteering at a soup kitchen, donating clothing, giving money to a charitable cause, or showing up to spend time with the elderly at a nursing home, your presence is powerful—and it can bring a lot of joy to the people around you. This holiday season, leave your mark on the lives of those who need our help. No act is too big or too small when it comes to showing compassion, kindness, and generosity.

Regardless of race, gender, sexual orientation, religious background, or economic status, showing kindness to someone in need is an act that requires little effort but has a substantial reward, not just for those who receive it, but for those who give it.

Below are some organizations where you can volunteer or donate to during the holiday season. Most importantly, never forget that the act of giving need not be restricted to the holiday season, but should be done all year round.

Toys for Joys is an annual gift-giving event for children in need. The event features an evening gala at the Revere Hotel and requires that each attendee bring a minimum of three unwrapped gifts for children in three age categories: tots, tweens, and teens. The event is in its 10th year and is a great way to put a smile on the faces of young children in need of holiday cheer.

The Boston Living Center (BLC) is a drop-in facility providing much-needed services for those living with HIV/AIDS. Each year, BLC provides up to 40,000 meals for their clients and they’re always looking for eager volunteers for their meals program.

The Pine Street Inn has served the homeless community in Boston for nearly 50 years. The shelter is looking for friendly volunteers to serve meals, staff its clinic, or perform a range of services as needed.
