Throughout his baseball career, designated hitter David Ortiz hit 541 home runs—but even he knows that the field isn’t the only place you can achieve success.
This is why the ten-time all-star is joining forces to kick start Eastern Bank Home Runs to celebrate those who have hit a “home run” when it comes to making a meaningful impact within their community.
Eastern Bank has a strong history of supporting local businesses and organizations that are doing good. Through its philanthropic arm, Eastern reaches more than 1,500 organizations in the New England area. The bank also distributes loans through its community development lending group to several community organizations and local businesses. Eastern Bank Home Runs will spotlight some of the groups and organizations that Eastern works with and are focused on making a difference in the lives of others.
“We try to help those who are helping others,” says Paul Alexander, Eastern Bank’s chief marketing and communications officer.
Driving a Movement for Doing Good
Many local organizations are helping others, and Eastern Bank is looking to shine a spotlight on their work and support them as they work to
fulfill their mission. These organizations range from daycare centers and organizations that support LGBTQ youth to those focused on tackling big social and public health issues like the opioid crisis, hunger relief, and homelessness.
Alexander says that Eastern Bank’s commitment to doing good isn’t just focused on the external organizations they support — it’s an integral part of the company’s culture. Eastern dedicates two months every year to organizing dozens of community events. Last year, for example, several employees spent one morning during the holiday season volunteering at Pine Street Inn — the second largest provider of affordable housing in the city of Boston. They’re aiming to partake in 100 volunteers events in 2018.
“People are encouraged to give their time. It’s not difficult for them to take a morning or an afternoon to volunteer,” Alexander says. “That’s sanctioned at the highest level by our CEO Bob Rivers. Overall, Eastern has a culture where people are encouraged to give back to their respective communities.”
Inspiring Others to Join Us for Good
Enabling that culture to continue thriving is crucial for Eastern Bank. Through the Home Runs initiative, an effort that is part of Eastern Bank’s campaign to Join Us for Good, the company hopes to start a movement that will inspire others to do good and rally behind people and organizations that seek to make a difference locally.
Though Eastern Bank is a large organization with more than 2,000 employees, Alexander says that he hopes their efforts encourage others to contribute in their own way.
“It’s the small acts as well as the large ones that really make a difference,” he adds. “We believe that people are innately good. And as trite as it might sound, there can’t be enough good in the world. There are a lot of organizations and a lot of people who are doing their small part. That is what a movement is all about.”
